Bernardo Wacholder

Bernardo Guido Wacholder, age 79, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at his home in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, with his family by his side. Bernardo (Bernie) was born on November 8, 1946, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to European immigrants. When Bernie was 9 years old, he and his family moved from Buenos Aires to Brooklyn, New York. Bernie spoke no English, so he and his teacher communicated in Yiddish. But Bernie learned quickly and, within a few years, he earned admission to Stuyvesant, an elite public high school in Manhattan. While in high school, he also studied computer programming at Columbia University. Bernie graduated from Stuyvesant at the age of 16, second in his class.
Bernie attended Harvard University and earned a degree in physics while working as a DJ and bartender. After college, Bernie developed an expertise in computer science and information technology. He worked at Grumman, Citibank, and ultimately IBM, where he stayed until retirement.
Bernie met his beloved wife Susan (née Komara) while they were working together in New York. They married in 1986 and built a loving family, integrating their children from previous marriages. Bernie and Susan shared a love of the ocean and travel; they also enjoyed the Saratoga Racetrack. For the past 20 years, they split their time between Ponte Vedra Beach and New York City, enjoying walks on the beach and the Metropolitan Opera in equal measure.
Bernie was an engaged and curious citizen of the world, with varied and expansive interests. He donated to numerous charities and loved to cook. He collected stamps, rare books, and African masks. He grew orchids and enjoyed a good bourbon. He loved to fish and search for shark teeth with his grandchildren. He was also an active member of The Amateur Comedy Club and The National Arts Club in New York City.
Bernie is survived by his wife Susan; his children Bonnie Titzer (Ben), Diane Toner (Will), and Carol Toner (Joe); and his grandchildren Eva, Charlie, Bradley, and Mason; and his brother Victor (Lynne). In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by his son, Adam.
Ever thoughtful, Bernie expressed his desire to have a green burial to reduce his environmental impact and to rest among nature. A service for immediate family will be held at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery in Gainesville, FL.
A memorial will be held in New York City on November 14 from 1-4 PM at John Krtil Funeral Home, 1297 1st Ave. (70th Street) NYC 10021. 212-744-3084.
Bernie will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.
